Magento eCommerce
Thursday the 3rd of April, 2008 at 10:18 am
The fantastic looking Magento eCommerce system has recently come out of beta. Having tried osCommerce and Zen Shopping cart for a few projects I have found that customising them to make good looking eCommerce sites can be an uphill struggle to say the least!
I was truly excited when I first read about Magento as it seems to hold customisation and web standards as key factors for a modern shopping cart system. Now that it has been given a 1.0 release I have decided to download it and give it a try. If it lives up to all the hype this could be an incredibly useful product. I will report my experiences back. In the mean time, has anyone had any experience with Magento? How are people finding it?

I just stumbled across it a couple days ago and installed it – I haven’t had too much time to play, but it looks fantastically user friendly. I’m finding a lack of options, though, but I can’t say that that’s a bad thing yet – I haven’t started to work up a template for it yet and I haven’t had a client ask for a shopping cart since I found it. I have noticed that it’s very resource heavy on the server, though (or my server is having a bad few days), it is a little bit sluggish at times, particularly in the backend.
I’ve worked on modifying the OSCommerce PHP source code so I can feel your pain. OSCommerce sites tend to look too “templatey” if you know what I mean. The company I work with is interested in using Magento for future clients, and I’m sure it’s leaps and bounds better than anything e-commerce I’ve worked with.
@Gavin – Yeah it does seem to have so much potential, but I have heard that alot of people like you are having resource problems. Don’t think I will be able to use it for a production site any time soon but will definatly be keeping an eye on it. Also last time I checked it wasn’t very well geared towards European web shops.
@JustChris – Yeah I do know what you mean. I’m sure OSCommerce and zen are good at what they do, I am just fussy about the way things look.
Good luck to both of you with magento! I really hope it works out. For me, I am hoping it improves its resource use and European capabilities. Thanks for commenting.
